Donkey basketball is cruel and, just as the name suggests, more ludicrous than anything the movies could ever concoct. During this “sport,” which some schools use as a fundraiser, high school students ride donkeys, and the animals are subsequently dragged, kicked, and punched by participants who have no animal-handling experience. The game sends the message to kids that it’s OK to torment and humiliate those who are weaker than they are. And in order to keep the donkeys from having “accidents” on the court, the animals are often deprived of food and water for hours before the “games.”Donkey basketball” games are loud, chaotic, and utterly bizarre events during which docile animals are pulled, shoved, screamed at, whipped, and forced to support riders who are too heavy for them to carry comfortably. Used again and again, the donkeys are lugged from place to place for months on end in small, poorly ventilated vehicles, with no consideration for their welfare, safety, or happiness. Equines who are systemically subjected to such stressors can develop unpredictable temperaments, putting riders and bystanders at risk. There has been a record of injuries, including a case in which an injured participant successfully sued a school for more than $110,000 in damages. Sadly, Redford Union High School in Redford, Michigan, has now scheduled a “donkey basketball” game for March 1.

As the number of Rhinos killed by poachers this year, in South Africa alone, passes the 550 mark, I continue with a heavy heart to spread word and call for support. This video produced for Rhino Heart brings the powerful message ‘Don’t Let the Rhino become a Legend’.  Yet if nothing is done, that is exactly what will happen. We need to stand together, work together, and with the support of Goverment put an end to their slaughter.

Last week Friday we celebrated the landmark ruling of 40 years jail time for Thai National Chumlong Lemtongthai, who had been involved in illegally hunting at least 26 rhino, with an order in place for 50 more. But charges against the co-accused, and the actual shooter were dismissed a few days earlier on the strength of Lemtonthai’s guilty plea stating that MARNUS STEYL and the others had no idea that these were illegal and sham hunts.

On the very same day that Lemtongthai was sentenced a brutal video was released showing MARNUS STEYL and HARRY CLAASENS to be the actual shooters. Harry Claasens turned State Witness earlier in the trial and cannot be re-tried.

You can watch the short clip of one of the illegal hunts. This video was taken off Lemtongthais computer. WARNING: The video is disturbing, it shows the helpless call of a wounded rhino, having been shot and trying to escape its attackers. As is happening all the time. Watch here.
Please also consider adding your voice to the rising tide of outraged people and signing the petition calling on the National Prosecution Authority to re-instate charges against Marnus Steyl.

Not a single one of us can afford to stand by and do nothing. Sign the petition, follow the posts, learn about their plight, protest, discuss and educate. These are our beloved African beasties and the onus is on every one of us to do what ever little bit we can to protect them.

sharkhugger:

Bite-Back has chosen Halloween to launch a shocking real life horror film that exposes the gory truth about the shark fishing industry and the controversial practice of ‘finning’ live sharks at sea.

Set to a haunting soundtrack, the 45 second black and white commercial, developed by the London advertising agency, Ogilvy & Mather, has been created to lift the lid on the cruel and barbaric practice that contributes to the death of more than 36 million sharks every year.

Deemed ‘too graphic’ for television the film has been given an 18-certificate cinema rating, but can been seen on YouTube.

oceandevotion:

Watching shark week? Then you’ve seen how commerical shark fishing (as done by “mark the shark”) is still brutally legal. He’s claimed to have killed “2-3 hundred thousand sharks.” If you know anything about the ocean then you know how fundamental these animals are for the ocean ecosystems and how ridiculously stupid it is to overfish this animals based on a irrational fear.

If you live in Florida or the states, I beg you to take action and do something! Write to the governor, or the mayor of Miami - anything!
